On August 9, 1965 , the small nation of Singapore was expelled from the Federation of Malaysia following a parliament vote. Subsequently, the Republic of Singapore was declared for the first time under the presidency of Yusof bin Ishak. Though at the time it was an island characterized by mosquitoes, poverty, unemployment, low income levels, poor infrastructure and facilities, the Singaporeans challenged themselves under the leadership of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to turn their country into a huge economic power .
