م، أفاقت سنغافورة على خبر يقول أن الاتحاد الماليزي تخلى عنها! وذلك بعد تصويت للبرلمان أدى إلى طرد سنغافورة من 1965 أغسطس من العام 9 في يوم الاتحاد الماليزي آنذاك، لتعلن جمهورية سنغافورة لأول مرة تحت رئاسة يوسف بن اسحاق، ورغم أنها كانت جزيرة يملؤها البعوض والفقر وكان أهلها في عوز تحتية ولا مرافق تصلح للاستعمال. إلا أن السنغافوريين قبلوا التحدي بقيادة رئيس وزرائها “لي كون يو” لتتحول في ظرف وبطالة وأدنى درجات الدخل. لا بنى سنوات إلى قوة اقتصادية هائلة ودولة تكاد تكون معجزة في مرافقها ومؤسساتها.
