After more than 125 years, the Suez Canal has become the most important navigational landmark, accounting for up to 40 percent of the world’s ships’ movement.

Around 125 years ago, the world witnessed the first waterway between the East and the West which connected the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, giving Egypt exceptional geographical importance. The Suez Canal added to the Nile’s contribution to the old country, of which Herodotus famously said: “Egypt is the gift of the Nile”. With the launch of the canal, Egypt became the gift of the Nile and the canal together.
