القصص والروايات بين مدينتي ليفربول وجارتها مانشستر تعود جذوره إلى القرن قبل الماضي حيث كانت مدينة ليفربول تشتهر بقناتها المائية التي تؤمن ، ويعمل بها ً لها دخلا كبيرا العديد من سكان المدينة في الوقت الذي تبتعد عنها ميلا مدينة 30 مسافة مانشستر الصناعية التي قامت بشق قناة مائية وإنشاء ميناء تم افتتاحه أكتوبر من عام 12 في . ليزدهر هذا الميناء 1895 ويستقطب السفن نحوها من مدينة ليفربول، ً بدلا مما أدى إلى غضب الليفربوليين إذ شردوا وفقدوا وظائفهم وزادت نسب البطالة والفقر. لينشأ من وقتها العداء التاريخي بين المدينتين الذي تطور بعد ذلك وينحصر ً ليصبح عداء كرويا في هذه اللعبة لحسن الحظ. ويذكر التاريخ حالة طريفة بعد اللقاء الأول الذي جمع بين الفريقين، ضرب الريدز حصون اليونايتد بثنائية نظيفة ليحصل نجوم الفريق على الثأر لمدينتهم المتضررة من القناة الملاحية الجديدة، ما دفع جماهير الريدز إلى نقش كلمة مانشستر على أغطية الصرف الصحي في ليفربول ليتواصل هذا العداء بين جماهير الفريقين إلى الأبد.
